To size MES or MNQ in a prop account, calculate the dollar loss at your planned stop, add trading costs and compare the result with your remaining drawdown. The advertised account balance and the platform’s maximum contract allowance are not sufficient sizing inputs.

MES and MNQ are different index futures contracts. A smaller tick value does not automatically make one safer: the stop distance, number of contracts and market movement determine the exposure.

Know what a point and a tick are worth

CME Group lists Micro E-mini S&P 500 futures as MES, with a $5 index-point multiplier and a 0.25-point outright tick worth $1.25. Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures are MNQ, with a $2 point multiplier and a 0.25-point tick worth $0.50. CME contract specifications and product codes.

A point contains four ticks for these contracts. If your stop is entered in points, use the dollar value per point. If it is entered in ticks, use the tick value. Mixing those units creates a fourfold sizing error.

Two ways to calculate the same MES loss

For one MES contract with a 10-point stop:

10 points × $5 = $50

That stop is 40 ticks, so the alternative calculation is:

40 ticks × $1.25 = $50

Both exclude fees and slippage. A result that changes when you switch units indicates a calculation error.

Use the complete planned-loss formula

A basic calculation is:

Contracts × stop distance in points × dollar value per point

For a more realistic planning figure, add estimated round-trip commissions and an allowance for adverse execution. Those allowances depend on the actual account and platform; there is no universal prop-firm commission to insert.

A stop order also does not guarantee execution at the intended price. The planned loss is an estimate, especially around fast markets and thin liquidity.

Compare MES and MNQ with appropriate stop distances

Consider two hypothetical setups:

  • MES has a 10-point stop, producing $50 of price risk per contract.
  • MNQ has a 30-point stop, producing $60 of price risk per contract.

MNQ has the smaller dollar value per point but the larger planned loss in this example. Comparing only the tick values would miss that difference.

Choose a stop based on the setup’s invalidation point and then calculate position size. Selecting a smaller stop merely to force more contracts into the budget changes the trade itself.

Include costs before rounding

Suppose the maximum planned risk for a trade is $180.

For the MES setup, assume an illustrative $4 per-contract allowance for total fees and slippage. The planned amount is $54 per contract. Three contracts represent $162; four represent $216. The arithmetic maximum within that budget is therefore three.

For the MNQ setup, using the same hypothetical $4 allowance makes the planned amount $64 per contract. Two contracts represent $128; three represent $192. The arithmetic maximum is two.

The $4 assumption is a teaching input, not a quoted fee. Replace it with your actual costs and a suitable execution allowance.

Size against remaining loss room

Suppose a prop account displays $50,600 equity and an active hard-loss floor of $49,700. The distance between them is $900.

A planned $180 loss consumes 20% of that room. Calling it only 0.36% of the $50,000 headline balance would conceal the much larger impact on the account’s actual survival margin.

Neither percentage is a recommended risk level. They describe the same hypothetical trade using different denominators. For breach planning, the distance to the current floor is the relevant constraint.

If the loss floor rises or a withdrawal removes equity, repeat the calculation. Yesterday’s position size can become too large for today’s remaining room.

Account for all open positions

Calculate aggregate exposure across the account. Two individually acceptable trades can exceed your combined loss budget when opened together.

MES and MNQ can both respond to broad US equity moves. Treating them as independent merely because their symbols differ can understate the risk of simultaneous losses. Position size should account for the possibility that both stops execute during the same market movement.

Pending orders also matter. A working order that fills unexpectedly may increase exposure after you believe the account is already at its limit. Review open positions and working orders together.

Contract caps are a separate constraint

CME describes Micro E-mini contracts as one-tenth the multiplier of their corresponding E-mini contracts. That economic relationship does not establish how an individual prop firm counts mixed positions. CME Micro E-mini overview.

A firm may impose distinct micro limits, product limits or scaling rules. Calculate your risk-based size first, then reduce it further if the account rules allow fewer contracts. Always use the tighter constraint.

Do not assume ten micros are permitted simply because one mini is allowed. Confirm the exact rule for the purchased program.

A pre-trade sizing routine

  1. Confirm the correct futures symbol and contract month.
  2. Check the active maximum-loss floor and any daily limit.
  3. Identify the stop distance in points or ticks.
  4. Calculate loss per contract.
  5. Add actual fees and an execution allowance.
  6. Divide the planned trade budget by that amount and round down.
  7. Check existing positions, pending orders and firm contract caps.
  8. Reduce size or skip the trade if one contract already exceeds the budget.

Rounding up defeats the budget. If the result is 2.8 contracts, three is too many for the assumptions used.

Review actual losses against planned losses

After each stopped trade, compare the estimate with the realized result. Separate price movement, commissions and slippage so you can see why they differ.

If realized losses regularly exceed the budget, update the assumptions rather than calling the difference an exception. Also track whether your strategy needs wider stops during particular sessions; an unchanged contract count with a wider stop increases dollar risk.
