Topstep Review 2026: Trading Combine Rules, Payouts and Account Details

Topstep is a United States-based futures proprietary trading firm best known for its Trading Combine evaluation. Traders choose a $50K, $100K or $150K account, meet the required objectives and then progress to an Express Funded Account in a simulated environment. Consistent traders may later be moved to a Live Funded Account that trades real market capital.

Topstep Review: Main Points

  • Futures trading only.
  • Trading Combine account sizes of $50,000, $100,000 and $150,000.
  • Profit targets of $3,000, $6,000 and $9,000.
  • Maximum Loss Limits of $2,000, $3,000 and $4,500.
  • End-of-day trailing drawdown.
  • Express Funded Accounts begin with a $0 balance and use the loss limit linked to the Combine size.
  • Two Express payout paths: Standard and Consistency.
  • Traders generally keep 90% of approved payouts.
  • Live Funded traders can unlock daily payout access and their full eligible account balance.
  • Current Trading Combines use TopstepX; legacy platform arrangements can differ.

How Topstep Works

Topstep uses a structured path:

  1. Pass the Trading Combine.
  2. Trade an Express Funded Account in simulation.
  3. Build a consistent payout record.
  4. Become eligible for a Live Funded Account at Topstep's discretion.

The Trading Combine is an evaluation rather than a brokerage account. Passing does not immediately place the trader in a live account. The Express Funded stage is simulated, but approved payouts are paid in real money.

Trading Combine Rules

AccountProfit TargetMaximum Loss Limit
$50K$3,000$2,000
$100K$6,000$3,000
$150K$9,000$4,500

Topstep applies a consistency objective during the Combine. A trader's best day must remain below the permitted share of the profit target. If one day is too large, the account is not automatically failed; the trader must continue trading until the objective is satisfied.

The Maximum Loss Limit follows an end-of-day model. It is recalculated from the highest qualifying end-of-day balance rather than moving continuously with unrealized intraday profit. Once the threshold reaches the locking point, it stops trailing. Touching the active loss limit breaches the account.

Trading must remain within the account's permitted position size. Daily loss controls and platform-specific risk settings may also apply, so traders should use the limits displayed in TopstepX as the operational source of truth.

Express Funded Account Rules

An Express Funded Account starts at a displayed $0 balance and receives a loss allowance based on the passed Combine:

  • $50K: $2,000 Maximum Loss Limit.
  • $100K: $3,000 Maximum Loss Limit.
  • $150K: $4,500 Maximum Loss Limit.

The Express stage remains simulated. The loss limit can trail upward and eventually lock at $0. If the account balance reaches the active Maximum Loss Limit, the account closes.

Topstep can combine a trader's eligible Express performance when determining the starting size of a Live Funded Account. Moving live is a risk decision, not an automatic right after one payout.

Topstep Payout Rules

Topstep currently provides two Express payout qualification paths:

Standard Path

  • Complete five winning days.
  • Each winning day must show at least $150 in net profit.
  • Request up to 50% of the eligible account balance.
  • Maximum request is generally $5,000.
  • A 90/10 profit split applies.

Consistency Path

  • Qualify in as few as three trading days.
  • Meet the 40% consistency target.
  • Request up to 50% of the eligible account balance.
  • Maximum request is generally $6,000.
  • A 90/10 profit split applies.

Traders who joined the new Topstep dashboard before January 12, 2026 may retain the earlier benefit of keeping 100% of their first $10,000 in lifetime profits before the 90/10 split applies. Newer traders should expect the current 90/10 structure unless their dashboard states otherwise.

Live Funded Accounts use a different payout framework. Eligible live traders can unlock daily payout requests and access to their full available account balance, subject to live-account risk and withdrawal rules.

News, Holding and Trading Style

Topstep permits trading around scheduled economic releases, but traders remain responsible for slippage, rejected orders and volatility. Futures positions must be closed within the permitted session and may not be carried through the exchange maintenance period or weekend unless a specific live arrangement states otherwise.

Trade copying is available for eligible accounts through TopstepX tools, subject to account and ownership limits. Account sharing, coordinated trading between different users, exploiting delayed data, unrealistic fills or platform errors is prohibited.

Platforms and Markets

Current Topstep Trading Combines are centered on TopstepX. The platform provides charting, order entry, risk controls and eligible account-copying features. Older accounts may have different platform connections, so a trader should not assume a legacy platform is available for a new purchase.

Topstep supports approved exchange-listed futures, including major equity-index, energy, metal, currency and agricultural contracts. The exact product list and contract limits should be checked inside the platform.

Advantages

  • Long operating history in futures trader evaluation.
  • Clear three-size Trading Combine structure.
  • End-of-day drawdown rather than an intraday equity trail.
  • Multiple Express payout qualification paths.
  • A defined route from simulated funding to a live brokerage account.
  • Current 90% trader payout share.
  • TopstepX includes integrated risk and performance tools.

Limitations and Risks

  • The monthly Combine subscription continues until the trader passes or cancels.
  • Passing leads first to a simulated Express account, not immediate live capital.
  • Payouts are limited to a percentage of the eligible Express balance and have request caps.
  • The consistency objective may require additional trading after an unusually large day.
  • Live-account selection remains discretionary.
  • Platform and rule terms can differ for legacy accounts.

Is Topstep Legit?

Topstep has operated since 2012 and publishes separate rules for the Trading Combine, Express Funded Account and Live Funded Account. Its longevity, defined live progression and current payout documentation support a strong trust assessment. This does not guarantee that any trader will pass, receive a payout or be selected for live trading.

Final Audit Verdict

Topstep remains one of the most established futures funding programs in 2026. Its strongest features are the end-of-day drawdown, clear account sizes, two payout paths and a genuine live progression model. The main trade-offs are the recurring Combine fee, simulated first funded stage and capped Express withdrawals.

PFA assessment: 95/100 — Trusted.
